Hi my fellow sensory loving friends. Today’s issue is gonna be a short one. I’m awaiting a friend who is visiting from Brooklyn and we’re heading to beautiful Maine tomorrow morning.
Taste:
Poke bowls.
Yesterday I had lunch with a dear friend who has been battling cancer for the last 2 years. She is literally the strongest and bravest woman I know. She is currently on several medications to keep the cancer from returning which causes a lot of GI distress and nausea. I wanted to take her to a place that had really healthy but equally scrumptious foods. I was thrilled to discover that a Life Alive cafe opened up near me so that’s where we went!
We both ordered the Tahini Date Smoothie - which if you read last week’s 5-senses Sunday had me soaring with delight.
I also got a tofu watermelon poke bowl, lush with juicy watermelon, creamy avocado, greens, miso glazed tofu and lots of sticky rice that made for the perfect bite on my fork each time.
The dressing was a tangy mix of sesame seed oil, mirin, tamari and lime which accented the textures I was experiencing perfectly.
Scent:
Ever consider building an outfit or brand or style based on a perfume or specific scent? I thought this was a super interesting concept!
Sound:
Take a trip to the way way back with this radio time-machine! This app allows you to return to the music decade of your dreams in every country in the world. The breadth of music here is breathtaking!
Check it out.
Touch:
Blades of grass
Every time I go on a hike like I did this past Friday, I am always sure to touch my hands to the earth and trees and shrubs along the way. When I encounter grass I am compelled to glide my hand across the top to feel the soft and slightly spiky sprouts of green that adorn the path. The soft, silky strands ground me and envelop my sense of touch with a gentle tickle on my fingers.
Sight:
Doodles
When I was a kid (and ok let’s face it, I still do this and I’m 51) I would doodle everywhere. On my backpack, on my arms, on random pieces of paper and everywhere else. Once, before my mom painted my bedroom walls I took red lipstick and doodled hearts and lips across every wall.
Doodling soothes me.
It gives me something to do with my hands as I’m trying hard to pay attention to something. It relieves stress and it just feels good from a tactile perspective to have a writing implement in hand, doodling to my hearts content. My most common doodle is the star which is peppered all over my old homework, notepads and journals of yore that I’ve saved over the years.
You can imagine when I saw this article that wall doodling was becoming a thing, I freaked out with excitement. Check out this latest decorating trend here.
I’d love to know. Are you a doodler? What is your doodle style? Do you have a signature doodle?
Tell me. What is rocking YOUR 5-senses this week? Let me know in the comments!
